Student IDs
Dear Beacon Families,
As we prepare for a strong start to the school year, we want to share an important update about a new safety measure we’re introducing for elementary students across Richland Two.
Beginning this fall, just like all other students in the district, BRE students will receive personalized student ID cards. These ID cards are designed to support our continued commitment to student safety and to help us manage everyday routines more smoothly.
When will Bookman Road students receive their ID?
All BRE students will take their ID card home the week of August 18. Bookman staff will take time to show them how to wear and use it each day, and we’ll be here to support families with any questions. During this time, students will use the IDs for breakfast, lunch, and library book check-out. According to the district calendar, bus riders will begin using their IDs on the bus the week of September 2nd.
Students will receive their first ID at no cost. If a student arrives at school without their ID card, a temporary ID will be issued that same day to ensure they can fully participate in all school routines. BRE will issue temporary IDs in the morning (7:10 - 7:30am) from the Media Center for students who do not have their ID. Students will be charged for temporary IDs.
A lost ID can be replaced. During the morning, a student can go to the Media Center and request a replacement ID. A student who needs a temporary ID for three (3) consecutive days will be issued a replacement ID. Students will also be charged for replacement IDs.
Why are students receiving ID cards?
The main goal is to enhance safety—both on campus and on the school bus. These ID cards will help us:
-
Improve bus rider accountability by having students scan their ID cards when they get on and off the school bus.
-
Strengthen school-level security by making it easier to identify students and ensure they are where they need to be throughout the day.
-
Streamline routines as our students will use their ID in the cafeteria (for breakfast and lunch), riding the bus, and in the media center (for book check out).
To ensure these safety measures work effectively, students will be bringing their ID cards home each night. We ask for your partnership in helping your child remember to bring their ID back to school every day. Your support will be essential in making this part of their daily routine.
These cards are not tracking devices. They do not contain GPS or any technology that tracks your child’s physical location. They are simply a tool to help us enhance safety, improve efficiency, and support your child during the school day.
A: Yes, students will wear their ID during the school day. It will be worn using a lanyard or clip provided by the school. Teachers of our younger students may collect them while in the classroom to limit distractions.
A: No. Students will be provided a lanyard by the school. Decorations on the lanyard may be distracting to the learning environment and could cause safety concerns.
A: No. The ID cards are connected only to basic student information used for school operations (e.g., lunch accounts, library checkouts, transportation logs). No tracking or external sharing of information occurs.
